“No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.”
—Albert Einstein
Einstein is of course remembered for his famous calculations. His formulas changed the way we look at the world. His impact can be seen in everything from microchips to outer space exploration, from digital clocks to nuclear reactors. Perhaps his most important contribution was his invitation to consider new ways of thinking.
When Einstein created his most famous calculation: E = MC2, physics, along with the rest of the world, was dominated by the limitations of Newtonian thought. Until the atom was split, physics followed the formulas and patterns developed by Sir Issac Newton in the 17th Century. When the atom was split, and Einstein’s theories were validated, everything changed.
In order to create his theories of general and special relativity, Einstein had to step beyond the limits of conventional thinking. In order to solve the new problems his theories created, Einstein employed a new level of consciousness, a new level of thinking.
Because Einstein changed the way one thinks, things like cell phones and laptop computers are everyday realities.
What would happen if we changed the way we think about church? What would happen if we altered our vision about how we define what church is or how we do what we’ve always done. “Church” is a definition as well as a group of activities. We are church by what we say and what we do. What if we changed what we say and what we do in order to make the church more inviting and attractive to new people?
Under the guidance of Session, the Growth Committee will be exploring what we can do more effectively, more efficiently, more convincingly, in order to grow our congregation by adding new members and new energy. We will be coming to you in the weeks ahead to find out what you think.
Jesus said: “I give you a new commandment….” In other words, Jesus changed the way we think; Jesus changed the way we relate; Jesus changed the way we serve. As his church we are invited to consider the new ways he leads us into the future. Thanks be to God!
